The Iridium Satellite Network is a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite network
in height of 780 km. Each satellite is cross-linked to four
other satellites - two in the same orbital plane, and two in an adjacent
plane. Iridium uses three gateways: Gateway Nr. 1 is
placed in Hawaii and is used exclusively by the US Defense forces. The second gateway
is installed in Tempe, Arizona, while the third is in Fucino, Italy. A
backup gateway resides in Alaska. Iridium to Iridium calls do not touch land lines, and are strictly routed to
and from the satellites. The Iridium system has the unique ability to
reach all of the world's remote areas, including the poles, the oceans and
many under-developed parts of the globe that currently have no
communications systems. There are no gaps in coverage, and no long distance
or roaming fees.
